Student Opportunities at Advanced Lithography + Patterning

Grants and scholarships, funded by leading companies and individuals from across the lithography community, help students attend for free. Students also have access to courses, special events, and award recognition.

US students can receive up to $500 and international students can receive up to $1,000 to cover travel costs. Reimbursable costs include air fare, gas, and/or trains, and lodging, such as hotel or Airbnb. Students will also be able to choose one short course they'd like to attend on-site.

Deadline to apply for a grant: 21 November 2024

*Students must save all receipts to receive reimbursement. If receipts are not kept, no reimbursement will be given.

Eligibility + Requirements


  • Only students may apply.
    • Students in high school (pre-university/secondary), community and technical colleges, undergraduate programs, and graduate programs qualify. 
  • Students must be enrolled in school and in a program related to optics and photonics at the time of the conference.
  • Student authors will receive priority over student attendees. However, all interested students are encouraged to apply.
    • A manuscript must be submitted to proceedings by the due date.
    • Preference may be given to those who have not received any previous awards from SPIE.

Additional details:

  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Applications will be reviewed by a committee established by symposia, conference, and advisory committee chairs.
  • Applications are reviewed on their own merit, based on the experience and education level of the individual student.
  • Students will be selected relative to other applicants with similar educational backgrounds.
  • If students know each other and both receive a grant, they are encouraged to lodge together to save on funds.

Nick Cobb Memorial Scholarship for graduate students

The Nick Cobb Memorial Scholarship supports the education of a graduate student studying a field related to advanced lithography. This $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to one student and include travel support tp attend SPIE Advanced Lithography + Patterning paid for by Siemens EDA. Please keep an eye out for the application process to open soon.


Recognition for outstanding work

Awards can boost resumes and launch indiviuals' professional trajectories, especialy students and early career professionals. If you know about research that deserves recognition, be sure to share information about the awards at SPIE Advanced Lithography + Patterning so researchers can submit their work.

Take an in-person course

Students are encouraged to review available courses at SPIE Advanced Lithography + Patterning.

Recipients of student grants will be able to select one short course of their choosing to be included with their registration.
