Narrow band Bragg notch filters with increased optical density for low frequency Raman spectroscopy

28 January 2025 • 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM PST | Moscone Center, Room 2003 (Level 2 West)

Abstract

Volume Bragg Gratings (VBGs) in photo-thermo-refractive glass enable unmatched filter performance for ultra-low frequency Raman spectroscopy. High diffraction efficiency, combined with ultra-narrow bandwidth, provides simultaneous access to Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman modes with frequencies as low as 5cm-1. Recent advances in the VBG-based filter technology enabled fabrication of Bragg Notch Filters (BNFs) with an optical density of OD>7 in the 500-2500 nm spectral range with transmittance exceeding 95%. Maximal optical density of OD≥8 was achieved at the near IR spectral region. Such filters can be manufactured with standard (5cm-1) and reduced (2cm 1) spectral bandwidth. The new generation of BNFs significantly improves performance and simplifies the design of Raman spectroscopy systems.

In 1997 Vadim Smirnov joined Dr. Glebov’s research group at CREOL, where the technology of photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass was developed. He received Ms. in Optics at School of Optics/CREOL University of Central Florida in 2000. He is co-founder of OptiGrate Corp. and since 2003 holds position of the Director of Holography and Diffractive Optics there. He was appointed to a position of Chief Technology Officer in 2010. In 2017 OptiGrate Corp was acquired by IPG Photonics as a key supplier of VBGs. Nowadays he is holding CTO position at subsidiary of IPG Photonics – OptiGrate. Vadim is coauthor of more than 100 presentations and publications and seven U.S. patents on PTR glass technology. His research activities include design, fabrication and development of volume diffractive gratings and holograms, nonlinear phenomena in optical glasses, and laser design.
